Drainage Dural: Water, Waste and Stormflow on the Big Blocks

1000+ five-star reviews

Of the four silos on this site, drainage is the one the local ground writes for us. Between the brick homes near Round Corner and the five-acre blocks out along the ridge, water has a long way to travel and a lot of gum roots to travel past.

What this hub covers. Every drainage job we take on: blocked drains, blocked sewer lines, stormwater, CCTV drain inspections, pipe relining and full drainage repair and installation.

It sits beside the general plumbing hub and the emergency plumbing hub, and the Dural home page maps the whole network. If water is misbehaving underground, outside or under the slab, you are in the right place.

When Dural drains start complaining

Different symptoms point to different pages, and the routing is simple once you know it:

One fixture slow, everything else fine

A local blockage, usually blocked drains work.

Every drain in the house gurgling or backing up

A sewer problem, which belongs on the blocked sewer page.

Water pooling after rain, soggy paddocks, dam overflow

That is stormwater, and it has its own page.

The same drain blocking again and again

Stop rodding it and find out why. CCTV drain inspections show the fault, and pipe relining often fixes it for good.

New build, extension, or a system that was never right from day one

If waste is actually moving toward the house rather than away from it, treat it as urgent: the emergency plumbing hub covers what to do in the first ten minutes.

What the Dural ridge does to buried pipe

Soil that moves

The blocks here sit on shale-derived, reactive clay ground that swells and shrinks with the seasons, and that movement works on buried pipe every single year. Joints shift, bedding settles, and every hairline crack becomes a doorway.

Pipe that predates the suburb's growth

The older homesteads from the orchard era still carry sections of clay drainage, which cracks under exactly that pressure. Add the tall gums and leftover orchard plantings, and you get the signature drainage failure of this suburb: a joint invaded a hundred metres from the house, on a private run no council will ever touch.

Repeat blockages far down the yard are not bad luck here. They are geology plus arboriculture, and they need a camera before anyone promises a fix.

Six drainage services, each with its own page

Blocked drains

The everyday blockage work, covering sinks, showers, yard gullies and the recurring root jobs.

Blocked sewer

Whole-of-house sewer symptoms, surcharges and the septic and pressure-sewer failures acreage runs into.

Stormwater

Roof, driveway and paddock water, including pits, table drains, box gutters and dam overflows.

CCTV drain inspections

The camera work that turns guesswork into a located, filmed fault.

Pipe relining

Trenchless repair that renews cracked or root-invaded pipe from the inside.

Drainage repair and installation

Excavation, renewal and new systems, from a collapsed line to a full stormwater design.

A mass of tree roots pulled out of a blocked drain

From Round Corner to the far paddocks

Drainage work here comes in two settings, and we are set up for both.

The village end

Near the Round Corner shops, the Dural Mall strip and the medical centre, the problems are suburban: ageing connections, greedy street trees, kitchen grease hardening in the cooler hills winters.

The acreage end

Out past the nursery and rural-supply businesses, the scale changes completely. A blocked drain at a Country Club function night is a different job from a surcharging septic tank beside a stable block, but both need the same things: jetting and camera gear on the van, and a price that does not move once the digging starts.

The long driveways mean the first visit has to count, because a second trip out here costs everyone an afternoon.

Each service in brief

Blocked drains

The workhorse. One fixture slow, a gully flooding in a storm, a shower tray that will not drain: most blockages clear with jetting in a single visit. When the same drain blocks a third time, that is the camera's cue, because a recurring blockage is a symptom of pipe damage, not bad luck.

Blocked sewer

Whole-of-house symptoms. Every fixture complaining at once points to the sewer line. On acreage the line may run to a septic or pressure sewer system rather than the street main, and pump failures and flooded tanks produce the same backing-up result. We clear, camera and repair across both setups.

Stormwater

Big roofs, long driveways. Paddock sheds and extended homes shed a serious volume of water, and the east-coast lows that roll over the ridge test every pit and table drain at once. We clear, repair and size stormwater systems to the area actually draining into them, including dam overflows and box gutters on outbuildings.

CCTV drain inspections

Eyes where none can go. The camera travels the run joint by joint, marking cracks, root masses and collapsed sections with measured distances. You see the footage, you understand the fault, and the fix gets priced against evidence instead of a shrug.

Pipe relining

Renewal without excavation. When the footage reveals a damaged stretch with sound pipe either side of it, a resin liner renews the line from within, and the garden, driveway or arena above stays exactly where it is. On blocks where digging up a hundred metres of pipe means destroying established garden, relining is often the only sane option.

Drainage repair and installation

When a spade is the honest answer. Collapsed clay, badly bedded lines from a rushed build, or a stormwater system that was undersized the day it went in: some faults need excavation. We renew and lay new drainage properly, and we design systems for the block rather than copying the last one.

How it works

How we diagnose a drainage fault

Diagnosis runs in a deliberate order, because the answer that costs least and lasts should win:

1. Listen first. Where it blocks, how often, after rain or after heavy use, one fixture or many: the pattern usually names the fault before the van leaves.

2. Clear, then camera. Jetting opens the line so the camera can actually travel it. Guessing past a blockage just schedules the next one.

3. Decide on evidence. The footage decides the fix: a clean, root-free pipe after jetting is finished; a cracked or root-invaded stretch gets relined if it qualifies, or excavated and renewed if it does not. You see the same footage we do, and the recommendation follows it.

Signs by property type

Older orchard-era homesteads

Clay runs, decades of root pressure and reactive soil. Watch for recurring blockages, a dip or soggy patch along the old pipe route, and drains that slow first after dry weather as the ground cracks and the roots push in.

1970s to 90s family homes

Longer runs, more bathrooms loading the sewer, and stormwater pits sized for a smaller roof than today's extensions. Watch for gurgling at multiple fixtures and water standing where the yard used to shed it.

Acreage with sheds and stables

The long runs and outbuildings multiply failure points. Watch for septic odours after storms, dam water rising over the spillway, and box gutters on sheds overflowing toward doorways.

What the local ground means for your drains

Three local factors shape nearly every drainage call we answer here, and knowing them changes the advice:

  • Reactive shale soil Ground that moves seasonally works joints loose, so flexible, well-bedded pipe and properly sealed joints matter more here than in stable sand.
  • Gums and orchard-era plantings Root intrusion is not a possibility on these blocks, it is a schedule. Any recurring blockage deserves a camera before it deserves a third rodding.
  • Ridge storm patterns Overland flow, not creek flooding, is the risk: water sheeting across paddocks and driveways when table drains and pits give up. Storm-season checks on tanks, sheds and drains are the inexpensive version of the repair.

Good questions, straight answers

Drainage questions from Dural blocks

How do I know whether my blockage is tree roots or grease?

A camera inspection settles it in one visit. Root blockages on the long acreage runs here recur and clear with jetting then need relining, while grease from big kitchens builds slowly and responds to high-pressure clearing and better habits at the sink.

Do you clear and repair drainage on septic and acreage properties?

Yes. Most of our drainage work happens beyond the reticulated sewer, on long private runs between house, tank and street, and we carry the jetting, camera and excavation gear those blocks demand.

Can you fix a broken pipe without digging up my whole yard?

Often, yes. Where the camera finds a cracked, root-invaded stretch with sound pipe on both sides, a resin liner renews the line from within and leaves the garden, driveway and horse paddock exactly as they were.

How often should drainage on an acreage block be inspected?

If a drain has blocked more than once, camera it straight away. Otherwise, a look every few years is sensible on the older clay runs, and worth timing before the storm season so faults surface on your schedule, not the weather's.

Is a blocked drain an emergency?

Slow but draining can wait for a booked visit. Waste backing up toward the house, a flooded yard or a surcharging septic system cannot, and those jobs get the same fast response at any hour.

Do you handle stormwater for sheds, stables and dams?

Yes, from box gutters on big sheds to table drains, on-site pits and dam overflows. We size the system to the roof and driveway area actually shedding water, not to what was enough forty years ago.

What happens during a CCTV drain inspection?

We feed a camera down the line and watch the run in real time, marking every joint, crack and root mass. You get the footage, a plain explanation of what it shows, and a fixed price for whatever fix it points to.
